What is cervical cancer?

  • Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Indian women (As per Globocan 2018).
    As per the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research, a woman dies of cervical cancer every eight minutes in India.
  • Cervical cancer is a preventable disease as it has a well defined, long pre-malignant phase which can be detected by regular screening tests and follow up.

What is Cervix?

  • The cervix is the lower part of the womb also known as uterine cervix. The cervix connects the body of the uterus to the vagina(birth canal). The part of the cervix closest to the body of the uterus is called the endocervix. The part next to the vagina is the ectocervix. The cervix is about 2-3 cms in length.

  • In its earliest stages, cervical cancer usually does not have symptoms. This is why regular are so important, particularly if you are sexually active.

  • Women who have had a hysterectomy

RISK FACTORS FOR DEVELOPING CERVIX CANCER

  • Age The risk of cervical cancer increases with age. It is found most often in women over the age of 40. However, younger women often have precancerous lesions that require treatment to prevent cancer
  • Smoking
  • Unsafe Sexual Practices
  • Weakened immune system:  Having an organ transplant or taking steroids raise your risk
