As per Indian Council of Medical Research data, India will have over 17.3 lakh cancer cases by 2020 -- a doubling of cases in 25 years.
It may see over 8.8 lakh deaths due to the disease, with only 12.5 per cent of the patients receiving treatment in early stages.
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in India.
There are more than 100 types of cancers; almost any part of the body can be affected.
The five most frequent cancers (ranking defined by total number of cases account around 47.2% of all cancers) in India in men and women are breast, cervical, oral cavity, lung and colorectal.
These top five cancers in men and women can be prevented,
for and/or detected early and treated at an early stage.
Screened
Screening helps to detect early signs of cancer or pre-cancerous conditions before any symptoms appear. By the time symptoms appear, the disease is often at an advanced stage.
Screening is effective in the prevention and early detection of cancers such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer. There are a wide range of cancer screening services available.
Talk to your doctor about screening exams for your gender, age and risk factors.
